이번 2020 태화강국제설치미술제 주제는 미디어 고고학자인 유시 파리카(Jussi Parikka)가 디지털의 물질성에 대한 개념을 설명하기 위해 사회학자이자 건축이론가인 벤저민 브래튼(Benjamin Bratton)의 ‘우리는 아프리카에서 온 작은 조각을 주머니에 넣고다닌다’는 문장을 인용한 것에서 차용되었다. 이는 우리가 사용하는 최신 핸드폰의 핵심 재료인 백금과 콜탄을 가리킨다. 제목의‘광석’은 경제성을 가지는 암석이라는 사전적 정의에서 자연(물)으로 그 의미를 확장한다. 기존 전시가 자연에 대한 보호와 중요성을 주목했다면, 2020 태화강국제설치미술제는 인류세, 자본세, 자연주의가 대두되는 현 시대에 지구(자연물)와 인간이 만들어 내는 것 그리고 인간이 어떻게 공생, 공진화 할지에 대한 질문을 담는다. 이를 통해 환경을 바라보는 비관적인 전망에 머무르지 않고인간의 개입에 따라 재차 작동 방식을 바꾸는 지구와 새로운 현상속에서 동시대 미술과 시각문화의 가능성을 주목하는 계기를 마련하고자 한다. 이번 전시는 이 세계에 대해 긍정적인 전망으로 세계와의 관계성과 그 속에서 생성되는 역할에 대해 고민하는 작가들과 함께 한다.

The theme of the exhibition was borrowed from media archaeologist Yushi Parica, citing the phrase “we carry a small piece from Africa in our pocket” by sociologist and architectural theorist Benjamin Bratton to explain the concept of digital materialism. It refers to platinum and coltan, which are key materials for the latest mobile phones we use. In this exhibition, the ore expands to a word that replaces natural objects in a local sense. If the exhibition that emphasized the protection and importance of nature for the last 13 years, this exhibition now raises questions about what we make together with the earth (natural objects) and how humans will coexist and resonate. To this end, this exhibition aims to provide an opportunity to pay attention to the phenomenon that is increasing in the future in contemporary art and visual culture.
