무라카미 사토시는 개인과 공공의 관계에 주목해, 개인의 생활이 어떻게 사회에 영향을 주는가를 고찰하고 있다. 동일본 대지진이일어났을 때의 경험에서 출발하여, 자신이 서 있는 사회의 지반이 생각 이상으로 연약하다는 사실을 느낀 후 ‘사는 방법’을 만드는것을 고민하기 시작했다. 2014년 4월부터 자신의 생활에 ‘이주를 생활하다’라는 제목을 붙이고 스티로폼 집에서 살기 시작했으며, 현재도 그 집을 짊어지고 나르며 이주 생활을 하고 있다. 그의 작품은 자기 성찰을 넘어 사회적 실천으로서 변화를 모색하고자한다. <무라카미 사토시 이주를 생활하다>(가나자와 21세기 미술관, 2020), <흡연소>(도쿄 쓰쓰지가오카 아틀리에, 2019), <걷는 시간과 그리는 시간>(교토 노와키, 2019), <집의 동사형>(부산, 2018), 등의 개인전을 가졌으며, 단체전으로 <동아시아 문화도시 가나자와>(가나자와, 2018), <바람을 기다리지 않고 – 무라카미 사토시, 우시지마 히토시, 사카구치 쿄헤이의 실천>(구마모토시 현대미술관, 2018), <세토우치 트리엔날레>(쇼도시마, 2016) 등에 참여했다.

Satoshi Murakami focuses on the relationship between individuals and the public, and examines how individual life affects society. When the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake struck, he felt that the society in which he stood was weaker than he thought. From 2014, he began to living in a styrofoam house that he made. It is the “Migratory Life” project. His work seeks ways to reverse introspection and transform it into social action. His recent solo exhibitions include <Satoshi Murakami Living Migration>(21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan, 2020), <Smoking place>(Tsutsujigaoka atelier, Tokyo, 2019), <Walking time, Drawing time>(Nowaki, Kyoto, 2019), <Migratory Life>(Busan, Korea, 2018), He participated in group exhibitions such as <Culture City of East Asia 2018>(Kanazawa, Japan, 2018), <Without Waiting for the Wind – Satoshi Murakami, Hitoshi Ushijima, Kyohei Sakaguchi’s Practice>(Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, Japan, 2018), <Setouchi Triennale>(Shodoshima, Japan, 2016).

작가의 경험에 기반한 <이주(移住)를 생활하기>는 삶의 지반은 생각 이상으로 연약하다는 발상에서 출발한다. 동일본 지진이 지나간 어느 날, 작가는 더 이상 월세를 내며 평범하게 작업하고 살아남을 수 없을 것 같다는 생각에 2014년 4월부터, ‘이주(移住)를 생활하기’란 제목을 붙이고 스티로폼으로 만든 집을 이고 다니며 살기 시작한다. 이번 전시에서는 2020년 도쿄에서의 삶의 일부를 기록한 영상을 선보인다. 집과 함께 머물 곳을 찾기 위해 자신이 발 딛고 있는 곳을 계속해서 설명해야 하는 상황을 마주치는 아이러니는, 우리의 삶이 얼마나 많은 수식어에 빚지고 있는지 느끼게 한다. 자고 먹는 일을 쟁취해가며 계속해서 걸어가는 작가를 비추는 카메라는 물리적인 이주를 보여줄 뿐 아니라, 현재를 살아가는 모든 인간의 실존에 대해 한 번쯤 생각하는 계기를 마련해 준다.

Taking off from the thought that the foundation of life is rather vulnerable, this work begins with the question of how we should live. Once experiencing the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake and the worries of paying rent, he goes around carrying on his back a house he made, calling his life <Living Migration> since April of 2014. The video follows parts of the artist’s journey, capturing the irony of having to explain and ask for permission every time he needs a site to unload his portable residence for the night. Viewers are reminded of how much our lives rely on so many details and modifiers. Scenes taken from the artist’s vagabond life—constantly on the road and in search of shelter—not only depict migration in its physical form but also question the meaning of human existence in a modern world.
