에미 스켄스베드는 베를린에서 활동하는 캐나다 작가로, 그녀의 작업은 디지털 애니메이션, 오디오, 설치, 웹디자인 등 다양한 매체를 망라하며, 뉴 테크놀로지, 경제, 신체의 소비, 서브컬쳐, 사회적 의식(ritual) 등의 주제를 다룬다. <Fixed Gear>(Chateau Nour, 브뤼셀, 2019), <Room & Bored>(Polansky Gallery, 프라하, 2018)에서 개인전을 가졌으며, <Yes, I’m Here>(Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba, 캐나다 매니토바, 2018), <Hybrid Layers>(ZKM, 독일 칼스루에, 2017), <제5회 Moscow Biennale for Young Art>(2016) 등 다수의 단체전에 참여하였다.

Emmy Skensved is a Canadian artist based in Berlin. Her practice spans a variety of media including digital animation, audio, installation, and web design, and touches upon themes of new technology, economic and bodily consumption, subculture and social ritual. Recent solo exhibitions include <Fixed Gear>(Chateau Nour, Brussels, 2019) and <Room & Bored>(Polansky Gallery, Prague, 2018). 해먹과 의자는 모두 현재의 물리적 시간과 장소에 관심을 유도하고자 하는 목적을 지닌다. 그것들은 장소 특정적 조각들로서 점유한 공간에 묶인 상태로 존재하며, 텍스트를 낭독하는 목소리를 담은 녹음물과 함께 전시된다. 녹음물은 초연결로 대변되는 현대사회에서 물리적 존재의 중요성을 이야기하는 작가의 목소리다. 작가는 관람객의 신체를 에워싸는 해먹과 의자, 그리고 그 안에서 고요한 음성을 들을 수 있는 다중감각적 환경을 조성함으로써 관람자가 말 그대로 작품에 ‘입장’하여 자기 성찰을 할 수 있는 기회를 제공하고 독려한다.

Both the hammock and chair-like sculptures are meant to draw attention to the physical here-and-now. These pieces are site-specific, tethered to the space they occupy, and exhibited together with a multi-layered voice recording of a text the artist wrote, which speculates on the significance of physical presence in our hyper connected current day and age. The artist’s intention with these works is to create enveloping, multi-sensory environments that visitors can literally enter into (by climbing onto the fabric form, and listening to the sound), which facilitate or encourage introspection.
